There is a need in greater Brussels for a Regional Express Net (Gewestelijke ExpresNet - Gen) to solve the mobility problems. Within the framework of the GEN project and the complementarity between trains and other means of public transportation, Brussel-West and Simonis will be intermodal interchanges from now on. After all, they offer a large number of connections with the MIVB undergrounds, trolleys and busses.
Modernizing to attract more commuters
GEN is not only an extension of the existing offering of trains, but also represents a significant investment in comfort and reception. The improvement in suburban zone infrastructure (improved screens, announcement boards and public address systems) and the investment in regional express lines, will significantly increase the competition and the attraction of the rail system.
From two to four tracks
The major trump card of the GEN project is an increased train frequency. For this it is necessary that the lines most involved are increased from two to four tracks. That adjustment not only increases the railways capacity but also ensures faster travel in and around Europe's capital.
